Angles All Around

Students learn the different types of angles, identify them in photographs, and write cinquain poems that share angles they find in the world around them.

Engage

Read poems about angles, like those in in Marvelous Math by Lee Bennett Hopkins and Karen Barbour. Introduce different types of angles (acute, obtuse, right, and straight) to your students.

Work together to write simple definitions for vocabular related to angles, such as:

• acute - less than 90 degrees.
• obtuse - greater than 90 degrees.
• right - equal to 90 degrees.
• straight - equal to 180 degrees.
• vertex - point where the two lines intersect to form angle.

Students can practice their understanding with the Sort the Angle activity.

Create

Ask students to use their device's web cam or an Image Library search to capture and collect images of different types of angles, like acute, obtuse, and right angles. Then, challenge them to capture or find images that contain multiple angles.

Students can glue their images to the paint layer and then draw angles on the images using the arrow shape in the paint tools. They should add text captions to label each angle. Be sure to have students save room to add a math poem.

Introduce students to the cinquain form of poetry. Cinquain (pronounced "cin-kain") is a five-line poetic form, using a wavelike syllable count of two-four-six-eight-two.

• Cinquain form:
• Line 1: one word, two syllables
  (subject or noun)
• Line 2: two words, four syllables that describe line 1
  (adjectives)
• Line 3: three words, six syllables that relate to line 1
  (action verbs)
• Line 4: four words, eight syllables that relate to line 1
  (feelings or a complete sentence)
• Line 5: one word, two syllables
  (synonym of line 1, or a word that sums up the poem)

Ask students to write cinquains that represent what they have learned about the angle, or angles, represented in their picture. Encourage them to write poems that reflect the image and angles as one entity.
