It’s time for March MATHness

Here are 10+ ways to get your students simply “mad” about math this March.

Symmetry slam

Encourage students to explore symmetry by drawing spring flowers and butterflies using the symmetry options on the paint brush. Students can paint with mirror symmetry or 4, 6, and 8-way directional symmetry.

To explore this idea in your classroom, check out the Exploring Line Symmetry lesson.

You can also help students build symmetry skills with:

Pattern power

Pattern recognition is essential to computational thinking and algebra. Wixie provides so many fun ways for primary learners to strengthen pattern recognition skills with a simple drag-and-drop or paint bucket fill.

You can find a new themed pattern activity each month in the Month by Month folders, including collaborative pattern challenges

Targeted tallies

Introduce students to data collection through tally mark surveys. Display the survey on an interactive whiteboard and discuss the results, fostering data interpretation skills and encouraging classroom discussion.

Each month-by-month folder in the Curriculum Activities library includes a themed tally mark survey, making it easy to start. Find surveys for things like school transportation to favorite shoes

You can create your own surveys with the 2-choice or 3-choice tally mark survey.

Glorious graphs

Have student conduct surveys about the seasons of their classmates' birthdays and create graphs to represent the data. This will enable them to visually analyze the distribution of birthdays throughout the year.

Project this onto your interactive whiteboard for a fun bell-ringer activity that gets students interacting with and discussing data.

Search "graph" at your Wixie home page to find more graphs you can assign or display immediately.

Glyphs galore

Creating glyphs is another fun way to foster their data interpretation skills.

For instance, students can represent data about their weekly activities, promoting critical thinking and following directions with a Butterfly Glyph.

Mindful measurement

Wixie includes measurement tools that make it easy to evaluate student understanding of length and angle measurement. When selected, these tools float above a page. They can be rotated, but not resized, so you know if students were using them correctly.

Students can utilize these tools to measure lengths and angles accurately. Have students get started with activities like Will They Fit? and Measure the Angles

Virtual manipulatives

Students can effortlessly manipulate the virtual math manipulatives in the Stickers library to engage with numbers and mathematical procedures.

Browse the Lesson library for lesson ideas that incorporate virtual manipulatives, like Work with Coins.

Magical math practice

Harness the power of Magic Stickers to create your interactive math assignments

With Magic Stickers, you can generate unique sets of problems for each student by placing the same sticker multiple times on a template. When students open the template, the stickers display random numbers or other variables, ensuring each student has a personalized math experience.

Shape showcase

Use Wixie's shape workbooks to help students master geometry learning goals.

You can find shape workbooks for kindergarten, first grade and second grade.

For more geometry activities, browse the Geometry folder in the Curriculum Activities library.
