Make "scratch art" holiday cards in Wixie

Remember doing scratch art in the back seat on a family road trip?

Scratch art cards, and the wooden stylus used to create them, are inexpensive and portable, so many students also have fond memories of them as well.

Wixie includes a folder filled with colorful Scratch Art templates. Students can use Wixie's Eraser tool to “scratch” and design art work on these templates. This makes for a beautiful base students can use for writing and sharing a holiday greeting.

Using the scratch art templates in Wixie

At the Wixie home page, ask students to open the Curriculum Activities library, open the Art folder, and open the Scratch Art folder.

Note: The preview for each template looks the same, but the name provides a clue to the pattern underneath that appears when students use the eraser.

Let your students choose the scratch art template they want to use, such as:

When students open a Scratch Art template, they simply use the Eraser tool to "scratch" a design on the page.

Recording voice greetings

Students can use the Record button to record a voice greeting.

Not only does recording avoid having to ask young learners to type, it provides the card recipient with a much more delightful greeting!

Sharing student work

Because Wixie works online, it is easy to share the greetings digitally with family at home, friends who live far away, or parents who are deployed.

To send the cards to parents who are deployed or family and friends who live far away, students can copy and paste the project URL into an email or share via Family Sharing.

If students have access to a printer, they can always print their greetings using one of the many print options or download it as an Image, PDF, animated GIF. and more.

Creating additional digital greetings

You can also create your own scratch art templates for students to use as holiday greetings.

If your students enjoyed making their scratch art cards this holiday season, consider creating and sharing thank you cards from class trips, Valentine's Day messages, greetings for Mother's Day and Father's Day, and much more!

Having students create and share greeting cards provides a fun opportunity to talk about the purpose of writing, to practice writing and speaking, and to connect the work students do in the classroom to the world beyond it.
