Winter Silhouette Scenes

After reading Goodnight, Santa by Dawn Sirett to your class, discuss the winter season and the animals typically associated with this time of year (e.g., reindeer, owls, polar bears, etc.).

Then, brainstorm a list of animals and the advice they might give to someone seeking Santa on a winter night.

Share with students that they will create their own winter silhouette scenes with advice from animals they might encounter while searching for Santa.

Assign the winter silhouette template for students to begin creating their winter silhouette scenes.

Teach students how to use the Page Picture button to change the background so it displays behind the silhouette or silhouettes if you'd like to give them more control.

Instruct students to use the paint brush tool to draw complete outlines of silhouettes and fill them with black using the paint bucket tool for the animal they might encounter while looking for Santa.

Have students use the text tools to type advice that the animal might offer them.

Allow students to share their completed winter silhouette scenes with the class. Encourage students to explain the advice given by the animal and why they chose that particular creature.
