Traditional Celebration Booklet
Share with students that they will be exploring and sharing traditions that are meaningful to their families.
Begin by having a class discussion about the importance of cultural heritage and celebrations within families. You might want to share examples of celebrations from different cultures to provide ideas and prompt student thinking.
Ask students to interview family members at home about their cultural heritage. Encourage them to ask about specific celebrations, traditions, symbols, and objects associated with these celebrations.
Provide time for students to gather additional information about the cultural celebrations they are focusing on and then guide students in the planning of their booklets. Each student should decide on a celebration to focus on (e.g., Lunar New Year, Diwali, Hanukkah, etc.).
To help direct student work, assign the book template and outline the structure of the booklet. For example, you could have students complete:
- Page 1: Introduction to the celebration.
- Page 2: Visual representation (photos, drawings) of the celebration.
- Page 3: Symbols and objects associated with the celebration (images and descriptions).
- Page 4: Personal stories or anecdotes related to the celebration (video recordings, captions and additional images).
Once students finish creating, use Family Sharing to share their hard work with their families for a surprise they will truly cherish.
Provide time for students to present their booklets to the class. Each student should share about the cultural celebration they explored, highlighting what they learned and why it is meaningful to their family.
