Sound Poem

Begin by discussing the five senses and how we can use them to add details to writing. Focus on the sense of hearing and ask students to close their eyes and listen to the background noise in the classroom or just outside.

As students share what they hear, prompt them to describe the sounds with a noun and a verb. For example, move from "bird" to "birds singing," and from "cart" to "carts rolling." You can write a list of examples on your board or use a collaboration template to work together. Examples could be:

  • Carts rolling
  • Door slamming
  • Teachers talking

Then, have each student choose a line from the list or come up with their own. Assign a blank canvas to each student, where they will type their chosen line.

Students can use paint tools or the Image library to add illustrations to represent their sound and use the microphone or talkie to record their lines.

For extra fun, have students animate their object.

Once all students have completed their pages, combine them into a single class book using the Project Wizard.

Print the completed class book or share it on your interactive board. Allow students to present their pages, read their lines aloud, and discuss their illustrations.
