Create an Adaptation of The Mitten

Begin by reading the The Mitten by Jan Brett to your students. As a group, discuss the plot, setting, and characters in the book, encouraging students to actively engage with the story.

To help your students think about the theme and ideas, have your class create an adaptation of the story.

For emerging writers, this may be more of a simple retelling or replacement of one animal with another. You can support your emerging writers with a sentence starter, like:

"A _______ (animal) crawled into the mitten to get warm."

or

"A _______ (animal) _______ (action verb) into the mitten to get warm."

Learners who are ready for a challenge can use The Mitten book template to adapt the story. Students can adapt the story by finishing sentences that start with transition words.

Students can print or share the digital version of their adaptations with parents, classmates, or even younger students.
