Grades: PK-2

Balloons Over Broadway

Begin the lesson by reading Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet. As a class, discuss the story, highlighting Tony Sarg's creativity and the contagious excitement of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

Then, let students know they will be designing their own Thanksgiving Day parade float.

Prompt the students to brainstorm ideas for their parade balloons. Encourage them to think about characters, animals, or objects they'd love to see floating in the Thanksgiving Day parade and what would make them special.

To get started, assign the Balloons Over Broadway activity to have students complete a sentence stem with their idea for a new balloon design.

The perfect balloon for next year's parade is a ________."

Have students use the paint tools to draw their own design and then use the microphone tool to share a story about seeing the balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

Conclude the activity with a "Parade Showcase" where each student shares their balloon design and parade story with their classmates.
