Sweet Sale

Third graders are targeted to fluently multiply and divide within 100 by the end of the school year. Although this could be accomplished using flashcard-style activities, students need, and want, to apply this skill meaningfully. This template is designed as a simple application of their computational skills with an added component for students to explain their problem solving strategies.

The Let's Sell Some Sweets template outlines a school fundraising scenario in which candy is sold during a carnival day. The template includes a page of four problems involving multiplication and another page with four division problems. Some states, such as Virginia, limit computation fluency with multiplication facts of 1, 2, 5, and 10.

The final page attempts to capture students' understanding of multiplication and division. Most of the Third Grade Operations and Algebraic Thinking standards require "describing a context," outlining the relationship between multiplication and division and demonstrating an understanding of the commutative and distributive properties.
