Mini Golf Measurements
Grades: 2-4
Mini-Golf Measurements
There is no more authentic math calculation than determining the area and perimeter. For example, the real-world need to calculate:
- the perimeter of a room before purchasing carpet.
- the area of your yard to better estimate the amount of fertilizer required.
Use the Mini Golf Measurements activity to have students calculate the area and perimeters of a handful of given hole designs, so they build skills necessary to order the correct amount of material to construct the mini-golf hole.
Page 1 and 2 show two different methods of partitioning, which both produce the correct answer. The page 2 example includes triangles, and may need a teacher explanation. Students can solve the problem even though they don't know how to calculate the area of a triangle, if they can see that the two triangles are perfect halves and when combined equal a whole rectangle.
