City of the Year
Grades: 6-8
City of the Year
Start by discussing the concept of a "City of the Year" and why a city might deserve such an honor. You can prompt students with questions like:
- Why might a city be chosen as the "City of the Year"?
- What are some possible criteria for this honor?
- Does the history, culture, or achievements contribute to its eligibility?
Then, let students know that they will be completing research on a city they would like to nominate for the title of "City of the Year" and creating a digital magazine to share their findings. Instruct students to choose a city they find interesting and provide students with time to research their chosen city, including its history, culture, landmarks, and recent achievements.
Once students are done with their research, assign the Best Place to Live magazine template to have student persuasively write about why their city deserves this honor.
Have students create a cover image for their magazine using the paint tools or images from the Image Library. Guide students in adding text, images, voice recordings, and videos to their projects. Students should explain why their chosen city deserves the title.
Once students are done with their project, have each student present their "City of the Year" magazine to the class.
