Break It Down

Imagine for a moment that you are a delicious piece of pizza that was just swallowed. And, you are making your way down the human body. What happens first? What chemical reactions occur in the body to support the growth and release of energy as the food travels through the body?

Assign the Human Body Design activity to have students label and explain how chemical reactions occur in the body to break down food. This activity asks students to draw and write to explain the functions of various organs and what happens to food as it passes through the digestive system and how each part of the process is vital for transporting and storing food for energy to help us thrive.
